"Deeppopotamus" is a duo of electronic musicians and composers Alexey Sysoev (Moscow) and Feliks Mirenskiy (Tel Aviv).
"Deeppopotamus Domesticus" - documentation of a live performance in october 2021 at the Cultural centre DOM. This material continues the duo's series of works that deconstruct canonical, well-known vocal melodies and the canonical voices that sing them. For example, the previous such experience was the deconstruction of the song "My Way" performed by Frank Sinatra.
The basis of "Deeppopotamus Domesticus" was the dissected voice of Feodor Chaliapin from the song "Flea". Thus, the whole composition can be considered a free remix of the voice timbre and selected intonations of the piece. But we can also say that this set is a series of successive variations on groups of complex parameters: on the rhythm, on the density of its intensities, on the timbre, on the concentration of the events of the musical material....
Music based on sampling organically needs its infinite and constant changes. This is the main subject of our concern. How to make the process of change conscious and consistent?
Our duo is a kind of desperate attempt to stay cool in the hottest musical contexts; an attempt to control the material sensibly and make it exciting at any moment of its development; an attempt to be generous in the face of the severe reduction of the expressive means of our music.
